Before creating The Working Artist, Crista Cloutier spent years inside the gallery system — selling millions of dollars of artwork and building relationships with collectors, gallerists, curators, and institutions across the art world.
She represented top name blue chip artists and introduced unknown artists to the marketplace. Her files have been collected by the Archives of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution.
Then she left that world behind and rebuilt her own life as an artist in Europe.

My name is James, and I'm a Scottish visual artist working mainly in acrylic and oil paint. Before becoming an artist, I worked in software development, so I understand the challenges of changing direction and building a new career. I love those moments when an artist suddenly sees a new possibility.
I’m Nicola, a Cape Town sculptor and painter who came to the art world after years of freelance design work and raising kids. As one of Crista’s first students on this programme more than a decade ago, I know what it feels like to walk in with no bio, no statement, no exhibition history, and no certainty. I aim to support that shift for you.
My name is Gillian. I am an interdisciplinary artist and art educator who loves to help artists create meaningful, engaging work from their whole being. I became a Working Artist Guide because I have seen too many gifted artists selling out instead of stepping up.
I'm Barb — an artist who has always been an artist, even when I couldn't see it. My path to clarity was winding: obstacles, self-inflicted diversions, a detour into become a registered architecture. Once I allowed myself to simply be an artist, life got easier and my art sold. I love to help other artists find their own flowing route — around and past the obstacles and diversions that inevitably show up.
