Artist Statement

My paintings conjure imagery of sea and skies, ponds, gardens and marshes through visceral layers of color and gesture. Flora, fauna, buds, fish, birds, and other flying or swimming creatures inhabit the watery environments.
I am inspired by etherial qualities of landscape,  expressionist artist through out  history, and the rich language of paint.  Saturated color becomes a material to build form and create movement within an emotionally charged space.  Like modernist painter Kandinsky, and many other synthesists, I think of color as having musical sound, which guides and structures the compositions.
Acknowledging the spiritual aspects of art, the work speaks to the magic and resilience of our fragile environment and our transient connection to the earth.
