Born in India, Alika Kumar has been a resident of Glendale, Arizona since 1980. Alika is an emerging artist whose lifelong passion to “gather world colors,” is revealed in her art that encompasses works in watercolor pencils on paper, acrylics on canvas, digital art, photography, and most recently in sculpture. This love and passion for art began with her artistic parents. Alika is forever grateful to artists and teachers such as Bob Burridge, Jerry Yarnell, Richard Robinson, Daniel Edmondson, Johannes Vloothius, Barry John Raybauld, and even Bob Ross who contributed to her “self-taught” skills. Recently, Alika has been taking sculpture classes with notable sculptors such Vala Ola, Jerry Cox and JD Parrish at the Scottsdale Artists School; as well as with Phillipe Faraut and Jodi Creager via e-tools. Alika has had solo exhibitions of her work at the Northern Arizona University’s College of Arts & Letters; Discover India Festival; and, the Mesa Performing Arts Center. Her work has also been included in group exhibitions at the Broadway Gallery, New York; APS Art Gallery; Arizona State University; Shemer Art Gallery; and, at the Art Link’s Art Detour. Alika earned two Masters degrees in Business Administration from Thunderbird, the Global School of International Management, Glendale, AZ; and, from the Arizona State University. She has been serving as the director of the Phoenix MBDA Business Center since 2006, but squeezes all the time that she can to pursue her love of creativity. Four of Alika’s paintings from the series “Urban Reflections” are in the permanent collection and on display at the Sheraton Downtown Phoenix.
I am motivated by diversity. Diversity of cultures, expressions, colors, shapes, flora, fauna, and the landscapes that cover our planet. While there is much distress in the world, I refrain from bringing it to my canvas. I prefer to celebrate the beauty, the hope and imagination. My work is an effort to enhance and honor with color, the lighter, deeper, and more positive side of the human experience.
I am an artist and sculptor, gathering world colors in my paintings that evoke uplifting feelings of joy and celebration.
